Focus
The Imperial College BioEnergy Group's research focus is on techno-economic, environmental and policy issues related to biomass energy systems for the heat, electricity and transport sectors. Work is carried out for a range of research councils, government and international organisations, non-government organisations and industry. Group members have published extensively in the area, and participate in national and international expert committees. The Group hosts postgraduate students and its members teach on postgraduate courses at Imperial College and at other universities. The Group interacts closely with other members of the Centre for Environmental Policy, where it is located, and with other research groups in the College, such as the Centre for Process Systems Engineering.
The Group is currently coordinating the TSEC BIOSYS project on "whole systems approach to analysing bioenergy demand and supply" which is funded by the UK Research Councils. Other important projects include: Bioethanol for Sustainable Transport (BEST), New Improvements for Lignocellulosic Ethanol (NILE), Framework development for an international bioenergy programme for the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and participation in IEA Bioenergy Task 40 on Sustainable International Bioenergy Trade.
Dr Ausilio Bauen is the head of the group which is composed of an inter-disciplinary team of twelve experienced researchers. He graduated in physics engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and holds MSc and PhD degrees in energy technology and policy respectively from Imperial College and King's College in London. His research focus is on techno-economic, environmental and policy aspects of biomass fuel chains for power and transport fuel applications. Ausilio also acts as a consultant to government and industry, and is part of national and international expert committees.
Prof. Peter Pearson is the Director of the Imperial Centre for Energy Policy & Technology (ICEPT). He is a Professor in Energy & Environmental Economics, and also a member of a number of high level expert committees, such as the European Commission's Advisory Group on Energy (AGE) for the 6th Framework RTD Programme. He has a long term interest in linkage between the use of biomass for energy and its role in development.
Dr Jeremy Woods is a Research Fellow at ICEPT. He holds a PhD from King's College London and his research interests focus on the interaction between development, land-use and the sustainable exploitation of renewable resources, in particular biomass energy. He has extensive research and project experience in developing countries, in particular Africa, Asia and the Pacific region, and currently co-ordinates an ICSU/SCOPE research network on the 'Sustainable use of Southern African savannas'.
Dr Frank Rosillo-Calle is a Research Fellow at ICEPT. He obtained his doctorate in biological sciences, at the universities of Aston, UK, and Campinas, S.P., Brazil, where he investigated Brazil's ethanol fuel programme. He has over 20 years experience in bioenergy research, and has carried out many research projects and consultancy work in Europe and the rest of the world. Research areas include biomass production and supply, energy and carbon flows, ethanol fuel, environmental impacts and policy analysis. He has taught at various universities nationally and internationally, and published extensively in these areas.
Dr Calliope Panoutsou is a Research Associate at ICEPT. She holds a PhD from Aston University and her research interests focus on biomass resources, economic appraisal of bioenergy chains, biorefinery, and bioenergy market analysis. She has extensive research and project experience in bioenergy R&D underway throughout Europe and has coordinated several EU projects involving multi-disciplinary research on bioenergy. She also acts as expert in EU bioenergy, biofuels and agriculture committees.
Antonio Marco Pantaleo graduated in electrical engineering at the Politecnico of Bari (Italy) in 2000. Since 2001, he is working as researcher associate at the PROGESA Department of the University of Bari, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. Its main research interests regard bioenergy, distributed generation, energy systems and energy efficiency for the agro-industrial sector.
He is permanent researcher since June 2006 at the PROGESA Department, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, University of Bari. He is visiting researcher at the ICEPT, Centre for Energy Policy and Technology, Imperial College London, since 2006. He also joined Edison Energie Speciali in 2001, working as business developer of biomass power plants in Italy, and GRTN Spa (Gestore della Rete di Trasmissione nazionale), working in the strategy and innovation department as strategy analyst, with main duties in the evaluation of the perspectives of power generation in Italy.
His expertise includes techno-economic assessment of bioenergy systems, DSM and CHP optimization systems, optimal sizing of biomass power plants, energy demand analysis, power systems modelling, GIS and sustainability assessment. He also has knowledge of energy systems and regulations in Italy and UK, energy saving measures and ESCOs approaches, Energy Planning, operational issues of RES.
At the Bioenergy Group of ICEPT, he is working mainly on the assessment of the potential bioenergy demand for heat, electricity and CHP in UK, and on the techno-economic feasibility of small scale biomass power plants for the tertiary sector, in the framework of the BIOSYS-TSEC project. Moreover, he is working on the assessment of the potential role of bioenergy for urban areas and on the comparison of measures and rules to enhance the energy efficiency in Italy and UK.
Raphael Slade is a Research Associate at ICEPT/CEP. He holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College. His research interests focus on the technical and economic appraisal of biomass derived transport fuels and their supply chains. Raphael joined ICEPT from the Carbon Trust where he was responsible for delivering the Trust's £4m Applied Research programme supporting the development and commercialisation of new energy technologies.
Sophie Jablonski is a Research Associate at ICEPT/CEP. She holds an MSc in Engineering from Ecole Centrale Paris (France), and an MPhil in Environmental Science from the University of Cambridge. Her research interests focus on the development of bioenergy technologies in the UK as a significant supply option for heat and power. Sophie was previously working at the World Bank in Washington DC, where she was dealing with energy and transport infrastructure operations in the Middle East & North Africa region.
Miles Perry is a PhD student at ICEPT/CEP investigating aspects of international bioenergy trade. He holds an MA in Environmental Economics from the University of East Anglia and an undergraduate degree in French & Italian from Durham University. He is involved in the TSEC and IEA Task-40 projects where his research focuses on the potential for international trade in bioenergy, from a UK perspective. Prior to joining ICEPT, Miles held several positions in local government.
